Chattru, Lahul & Spiti 2002 - The quest

The nature of the quest was to find the real quality rock for bouldering. I wouldn't be content with just a few boulders and had exhausted the solang valley in a few days. My search then has gone from the northmost tip of Ladakh (Nubra) to places in Upradesh and now in Himachal Pradesh. the Rohtang pass has good problems but bad landings on steep hillside. It was after Rohtang in the beautiful and sparsely populated Lahul/Spiti area. Here I found what I was searching for! I then spent the next 3 months staying there in caves (there are no rooms) climbing as much as I physically can, inbetween treks to explore new areas. I did problems all over the places but some areas I concentrated on intensely working out a lot of wicked climbs.

INFO: The weight of luggage was my main concern so I was lightweight and wouldn't need a tent as there will always be overhanging boulders (otherwise we won't be there!). Anyway if you have a crashpad it means you're going to be OK and don't need all the fancy gear that the trekkers have. Petrol stove is best (fuel in Chattru) and dal rice atta sampa alu onion and seasonal peas, all these things and more available in the super holiday village of Chattru. Good cafe's are there also with caves just a few minutes walk away. It's all a perfect setup for easy hard-life type of living. Go for it!
